It’s not enough to say: “innovation lives everywhere across our organisation” or “it’s everybody’s job to innovate around here”.
Yes innovation needs to live in the business units and in a separate innovation unit entirely.
But innovation must also live with the CEO to have an impact (or with someone who reports directly to the board of directors.)
Invincible companies like Amazon and Ping An know that innovation needs power and legitimacy to be successful. If your CEO spends less than 40% of their time on innovation, what kind of message do you think it sends? How seriously do you think the rest of the organization will take it? (The Rita McGrath Test.)
So while everyone in the organisation can contribute towards different types of innovation, it’s essential that innovation has a main address with the CEO.
On this month’s StratChat, Tendayi Viki (author of Pirates in the Navy) and Alex Osterwalder (lead author of The Invincible Company) share how you can encourage innovation to establish roots and live sustainably in your organisation.
We’ll also have special guest Rodrigo Tona (CEO of Ternova Group) on the show.
Rodrigo is committed to his role in driving innovation at the company. He spends 50% of his time on innovation each week, dedicating the last two years on shifting Ternova’s culture to build a sustainable home for innovation - encouraging everyone to think about innovation. Now the whole company understands what “business model, value proposition, testing and pivoting means.”
We’re excited to hear his experiences and stories.
As usual, we’ll also have some fun exploring what’s hot or not in the world of corporate innovation. We'll share practical tools and go beyond bottom up innovation.
